How to Support Animals in Need During COVID-19

A group needing support during the pandemic you may not always consider are animals currently in our shelters. While most, if not all, business have moved to a work-from-home format, animal shelter employees can’t manage shelters from the comfort of their home. Luckily, the Humane Society of United States formed a COVID-19 Relief Fund to “support animal shelters, rescue groups, and other organizations that are responding to the economic impacts of the COVID-19 outbreak” (Humane Society, 2020). Additionally, the Pets for Life program within the Humane Society supports pet owners in underserved areas and is focusing on seniors who may be unable to provide resources for their pets due to the current pandemic. The Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association has also ensured that veterinary services will continue to take place and remain as essential businesses (Humane Society, 2020). The Humane Society International and the Association for Animal Welfare Advancement have partnered to create a “toolkit for animal shelters” that helps shelters around the world respond to the needs of their surrounding communities. The ASPCA has set up temporary food distribution centers across New York City, Los Angeles, Miami, and Asheville to offer free pet food to individuals by appointment (ASPCA, 2020). While these organizations are making huge efforts to protect our pets across the country, these organization can’t function without funds to do so. Here are some resources to help these organizations continue to do this amazing work…
  1. Donate to the ASPCA
  2. Donate to the Humane Society
  3. Purchase something off of your local shelter’s amazon wish list
  4. Drop off extra food or supplies to your local shelter
  5. Check in on elderly or ill neighbors to make sure they have everything they need to care for their animals
