Five great ways to get fit this summer

Over the course of the winter, people tend to stay inside more often and generally lead a more sedentary lifestyle. This leads to many people being in worse shape when the colder months end and summer begins. Not to fear though because we're sharing our favorite ways to get in shape this summer!

There's a reason yoga is one of the most popular forms of exercise today. The list of health benefits is practically never ending! According to the American Osteopathic Association, yoga increases flexibility, burns fat, and even improves cardiac and respiratory function!

Another great part of yoga is because of its minimalistic nature, there's no need to leave the comfort of your home to enjoy its benefits. The only necessary equipment is a mat and your body and thanks to YouTube channels like this one, finding a great routine is easy!

Gyms are great because as the popularity of fitness continues to grow meteorically, gyms are becoming more commonplace every day! This means that not only is it incredibly convenient to find a gym near you, it's easy to find a gym that fits YOUR fitness goals!

Whether you're looking to pack on muscle or shed a few pounds, the modern gym has it all. Between free weights, cardio equipment, personal trainers, and group fitness classes, chances are you'll find something to do at the gym that excites you! There are tons of websites that offer programs for everyone from beginners to gym vets and that means a gym can help you be successful at any step in your fitness journey.

If you want to build strength but aren't interested in lifting weights, calisthenics, or bodyweight training might just be for you. Pushups and chin-ups often come to mind when people think of calisthenics, but those are just two of the most basic movements and it only gets more fun from there!

The best part of calisthenic exercises is that they can be performed almost anywhere. Since most rely entirely on bodyweight, all you need is your own body and if you want to incorporate bar exercises like pull-ups or dips, all that's needed is well, a bar! Since there's usually no equipment involved, calisthenics can be performed in your home, office, or on the beach!

Whether you want to increase your lung capacity, or cut down on your mile time, doing good ole' steady state cardio like swimming, running, or hiking in the great outdoors is an awesome way to achieve your fitness goals and enjoy the beautiful weather at the same time!

It's super easy to find awesome cardio tracking equipment like Fitbit, and you're sure to look your best while you get in shape with so many great athleisure wear options out there!

Let's be honest. Not everyone has an abundance of time each day that they can devote to their health and wellness. If this sounds like you, then High Intensity Interval Training, or HIIT, might be for you. A session typically only lasts between 10 and 30 minutes and consists of a repeated circuit of short bursts of intense movement like sprinting or burpees followed by a similar period of rest.

This is designed to raise and lower the heart rate in rapid  succession which doesn't only burn massive amounts of calories, but often reduces blood pressure in the long run and even decreases blood sugar!

Which is why we keep our gym free to use for all residents and open 24/7. In it you will find a plethora of state-of-the-art cardio equipment, weight machines, and free weights! This past year, we purchased new equipment as well including a set of medicine balls, yoga mats, a balance ball, and even a weighted hula hoop!
